Outing to Herstmonceux Castle
Herstmonceux Castle is in East Sussex and is brick built, dating from the 15th C (1441). It is one of the oldest significant brick buildings still standing in England. It was constructed by Roger Fiennes, a descendent of the Morceux family (Treasurer to the household of Henry VI) as a country home. It sits at the mouth of a small valley facing south over the Pevensey levels to the sea. It is renowned for its Elizabethan gardens and also hosts the Royal Greenwich Observatory.
So, how about a day out wandering the 600 acres (!) of carefully managed woodland and beautifully themed formal gardens and possibly pop into the Chestnuts Tea Room for a little light refreshment!
