Outing to the Shuttleworth Collection, Biggleswade

Shuttleworth is a Hybrid estate. One part, an early 19^th century regency Ornamental ‘’Swiss style’’ garden and the other, a series of aircraft hangars housing ‘planes (and cars trucks and motorbikes-no boats or trains) from the 1890s to 1950s. Both are extensive (garden 9 acres) and are really outstanding in their own sphere. Everything is in working order and most are regularly flown.

The garden is planted with many trees and shrubs and has some unique buildings including: a ‘’Swiss Cottage’’; a grotto and fernery; various rock gardens and quarries and many ornamental bridges over the water features. There are some magnificent trees including giant Redwood and cedar of Lebanon.

The estate has two grass runways and five hangars packed with many working/flying aircraft – principally of the early 20^th century.

The site has an excellent cafeteria providing hot and cold meals all day There is also a well-stocked souvenir shop.

The price of £37 includes site entry and unguided entry to the gardens and hangars. Two guided tours are also available at an additional £10 per tour. The garden tour takes approximately one hour and the hangars tour one to two hours. The tours will be timed so that both can be undertaken at different times during the day. You should have a great day whatever your interests.

Cost : Entry and unguided visit £ 37pp; then add £10 pp for each guided tour.

A complimentary tea/coffee is included on arrival.

9.35 am. Britannia, Bus stop

Depart for home at approx. 4pm / arrive back circa 5.30pm.
