SUMMARY:Meet-up at Cliveden for Coffee and Garden Tour
DESCRIPTION:We plan to have an informal get-together at Cliveden on 4 June\, meeting in the Conservatory Café for a 12-noon coffee and cake (or light lunch if you so desire) – order and pay yourself at the café counter. Then at 2pm\, if you would like to\, join a guided tour of the garden led by head gardener Anthony Mason. Maybe their General Manager Robert Miles or their Operations Manager Amy Goldsworthy will have time to come and talk to us as well.\nThis is a self-drive event\, though I expect there will be places available for those without transport. \nWe need to tell Cliveden the number of members coming\, which may be limited. SUMMARY:Outing to the Shuttleworth Collection\, Biggleswade
DESCRIPTION:Shuttleworth is a Hybrid estate. One part\, an early 19th century regency Ornamental ‘’Swiss style’’ garden and the other\, a series of aircraft hangars housing ‘planes (and cars trucks and motorbikes-no boats or trains) from the 1890s to 1950s. Both are extensive (garden 9 acres) and are really outstanding in their own sphere. Everything is in working order and most are regularly flown. \nThe garden is planted with many trees and shrubs and has some unique buildings including: a ‘’Swiss Cottage’’; a grotto and fernery; various rock gardens and quarries and many ornamental bridges over the water features. There are some magnificent trees including giant Redwood and cedar of Lebanon. \nThe estate has two grass runways and five hangars packed with many working/flying aircraft – principally of the early 20th century. \nThe site has an excellent cafeteria providing hot and cold meals all day There is also a well-stocked souvenir shop. \nThe price of £37 includes site entry and unguided entry to the gardens and hangars. Two guided tours are also available at an additional £10 per tour. The garden tour takes approximately one hour and the hangars tour one to two hours. The tours will be timed so that both can be undertaken at different times during the day. You should have a great day whatever your interests. \nCost : Entry and unguided visit £ 37pp; then add £10 pp for each guided tour. \nA complimentary tea/coffee is included on arrival. \nDepart:           9.15 am. SUMMARY:Outing to Alresford and Watercress Line
DESCRIPTION:Alresford is a charming Georgian town which was known for its watercress industry. The centre has almost no modern architecture\, and many independent shops. Importantly\, it also has a good range of cafes\, former coaching inns\, other pubs and restaurants. There is a Thursday morning market in the main street and an impressive parish church which is usually open. The town also has a pleasant riverside walk and a Millennium Trail.\nAlresford is at one end of the Watercress Line\, one of the UK’s best known steam heritage railways. Trains run from here to Alton and back\, a 40-minute trip each way. The railway’s headquarters with its main buffet and gift shop is at Alresford.\nAfter our coach arrives\, members are free to wander around Alresford or (for those who have paid for the train) to get on your choice of one of the trains to Alton and back. Alresford station is only a three minute walk (along flat pavements) from the centre of the town. The railway has a ramp or lift at both stations.\nAlton has a pleasant old town centre\, with a pedestrianised high street. It has several Jane Austen connections. Amongst other things\, it has a free-to-enter small local history museum (The Curtis Museum). There are also cafes and restaurants. The town centre is a 10 minute walk from Alton station (there is a slight hill after the museum) but there is a café and a Waitrose very close to the station. If you do not wish to visit Alton\, there is a 20 minute wait at Alton for the return train. Or if wished\, you can spend longer in Alton itself.\nThe railway has two intermediate station stops. SUMMARY:Lord Desborough and the National Trust
DESCRIPTION:William Grenfell\, Lord Desborough\, was a great Victorian amateur sportsman who went on to stage the Olympic Games at White City in August 1908.  He was chairman of the Thames Conservancy Board for 35 years and oversaw many important improvements to the river.  Sandy Nairne CBE FSA was appointed Deputy Chair of the National Trust in 2022. \nTalk by Sandy Nairne.
