SUMMARY:Outing to NT Upton House and Hook Norton Brewery
DESCRIPTION:Two in one!  We first visit the NT house at Upton with it’s extensive art collection.  Then we visit the working Victorian brewery at Hook Norton. \nUpton \nThe coach will take us into the Cotswolds\, a little beyond Banbury.  The National Trust house and gardens at Upton are impressive. They were left to the NT after the second World war by a former chairman of Shell\, Lord Bearstead.  He built up an impressive art collection\, which is displayed in the house.  This property has the usual café\, NT shop\, and bookshop.  The NT’s Upton website gives more information. \n \nThe collection includes paintings by:  Bosch; Breugel; Constable; Canaletto; Gainsborough;  Hogarth; Raeburn; Rembrandt; Stubbs.  There is also quite a collection of ceramics \, including a Sèvres grand dinner service. \n  \n \n  \nThe gardens are substantial in their own right\, with a large level lawn\, and great view over the ha-ha.  The lower gardens and large lily pond are charming. \n \nMembers will have until early afternoon to wander around the house and gardens\, visit the café and bookshop and so on. \n  \n  \n  \n  \nHook Norton \nA short journey will take us to the charming town of Hook Norton with its Victorian brewery.  This is in full working order\,  with much of its original equipment from the days of steam.  It is well known to Oxfordshire’s beer afficionados. \nThe brewery tour is a pre-bookable optional extra\, and it takes us round the whole brewery.  Over a period of nearly 2 hours\, we can expect to see the whole brewing process and equipment.  The tour concludes with a complimentary visit to the tasting room! \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n \nThe alternative (to the brewery tour) is to visit the (free) on-site small local history museum\, and/or giftshop or and / or café / restaurant.  Members might also be able to see the brewery’s Shire Horses in their stables or field. A stroll around the town itself is always an option. \n  \n  \n  \nLunch \nMembers will be able to buy themselves lunch at the Upton House NT café\, or (for those not partaking in the brewery tour) the brewery’s restaurant\, which serves a full menu until late afternoon. \nPlease note – limited accessibility  \nThe optional brewery tour unfortunately cannot accommodate those who use mobility aids.  It involves a total of approximately 100 steps\, and some of the stairways (five flights) are narrow or steep.  Sensible flat shoes must be worn – no open-toed ones or sandals.  Participants will be on their feet for about 90 minutes.  Some further details are available via the brewery’s  website. \nThe brewery restaurant and shop are level access\, but the museum is above the shop\, via a 15-step normal indoor staircase. \nTo see lower ground floor artworks at Upton House involves normal indoor staircases totalling about 30 steps.  Some of the gardens can only be accessed via many stone steps or a sloping stony path – the lowest point is some 30 metres below the house. \nPrices:   Coach to Upton and Hook Norton: £24.50 per person \nOptional Brewery tour an additional £25 per person   (Note Max 24 people) The brewery tour is no longer available to book. \nExpected timings: \nDepart: 9.00 am. SUMMARY:Outing to NT Avebury Manor
DESCRIPTION:Our last visit of the year is to Avebury – part of a World Heritage site – with its National Trust manor house (Grade 1 listed\, 16th century) and the well-known neolithic stone circle. The circle is older than Stonehenge and much larger\, as it used to enclose a village at some time in the past. Photos and further information can be found via this link to their website. \nThe visit will be an opportunity to see Avebury Manor in perfect condition since a major renovation\, as it was flooded in 2024 which closed it for about two years and it only reopened in Spring this year. Members will be able to wander around the manor and take part in a tour of the stones.\nThe manor and grounds include a museum created by the most recent owner\, Alexander Keiller\, an archeologist who had the wealth to indulge in both his interests as he was a very enthusiastic car collector. The wealth came from the family Keiller marmalade business. \nOnly one of his more exotic cars is at the Manor. This is an Anglo – French hybrid with the engine and chassis being built in France\, driven across to England and a body designed and built in England. This car in 1913 was driven from London to Edinburgh in under 12 hours. Oddly\, it is housed in an enclosed area of the barn where reception to the Avebury estate is located but is largely hidden so that the lighting does not disturb the bats that roost in the building!! \n \nA guided tour of the standing stones normally runs at midday and then at 13.00 and 14.00 and possibly 15.00. The tour takes around an hour and people do not have to commit to it until we arrive at the venue. There is an extra cost of £6 per person so members can decide on the day according to the weather and how they feel about it. The nearest part of the stone circle is only a few hundred yards from the manor. \n  \nExploring the manor is a self-guided activity. There are no guided tours. To get the best out of exploring the manor you need to use a two-stage flight of stairs to get to the upper floor. There is a banister rail at all points and a half-way point with enough space to rest between flights. SUMMARY:Outing to NT Hinton Ampner
DESCRIPTION:Hinton Ampner house and gardens have been much improved in recent years and now reflect the last owner’s vision of a quintessentially English country estate. A particularly good display of daffodils is said (by the NT) to be seen in the extensive gardens. \n \nThe house is now presented in the Georgian revival style to which the last owner (Ralph Dutton) remodelled it in the 1930s and then restored it after a substantial fire in 1960. All the main downstairs rooms and several bedrooms – each fully furnished – can be visited. As the NT’s website indicates\, there is nowadays a lot to see and do both indoors and out. \nThe formal gardens include some gentle terracing with great views out into the countryside. We hope to be able to organise a tour with one of the gardening volunteers. Moreover\, the wider estate also features a number of walks\, accessible from a point close to the house. \n \nRight next to the NT house and gardens complex\, All Saints church (Hinton Ampner) is also worth a visit.\nLike most substantial NT properties\, Hinton Ampner has a shop\, secondhand bookshop and a café (which was refurbished in 2025). \nThe coach parking point is unusually close to the house\, café\, shops and church – all are accessible on firm hard (tarmac) paths. Entering the house involves a few steps\, and the internal tour route includes one-and a half floors of indoor staircase\, mostly with handrails. To make the most of the gardens\, you’ll need shoes that grip – many of the footpaths through the gardens are across grass\, and indeed some may be closed if it is particularly wet. \nExpected timings:\nDepart: 9.30 am.
